Personal Devils was created in response to the idea of feminist fallacies. It’s title is a play on the phrase, "the devil is in the details.” It’s responding to the myth that feminism, or the identity of a strong woman, is hard, impenetrable, and cannot have faults. The image is of the contents of my purse spilled onto the ground, all laying on a piece of fabric I use as a cover up. The painting shows two books, both by women about women, my antidepressants, floss that I never remember to use, my last cigarette broken (I swear I’m not a smoker), texts from a friend, receipts, keys, diva cup, deodorant, and a journal. It’s an intimate look at the tool box of a woman. One who’s trying to learn, care for herself, care for the planet, an independent, strong woman devoid of performance. It’s the details that show how soft and hard a woman can be, it’s messy and strong.
